TALK THRU・BASE ROUTINE | heyclaire

Hey guys welcome today’s video in this tutorial I wanted to share with you kind of my go-to base routine I might not use the same products every single time, but these are kind of the techniques or the approach that I take towards applying my base because I have oily acne prone skin with hyperpigmentation and scarring and My base is usually my main focus of my look like my eye looks you’re not going to come here for crazy innovative new eye Looks I like to keep it fairly simple in natural nowadays But I thought at least I could share with you kind of the technique and my thought process when I’m applying my base I’m gonna talk a little bit about how I cover my acne scarring especially the pigmentation and Yeah, I hope that you guys find this video helpful. Okay. Good morning here We are as you can see I have the usual scarring and pigmentation issues But they’re slowly starting to improve my skin texture has improved a lot since I started using a couple things. I know I need to do an updated skin care routine, but today I just wanted to focus on kind of how I get my base looking really nice and dewy and glowy Even if I’m not doing any other makeup so my morning routine is very simple I pretty much just cleanse and then moisturize because in the evening is when I do most of my Treatments and whatnot so what I’ve been kind of trying out lately both in the morning in the evening is the new Shiseido energy essential energy Moisturizers they have three different ones. They have an essential energy date cream which has SPF 20 They have a moisturizing gel cream, and then of course lastly they have a moisturizing cream in the mornings especially I really like to use the moisturizing gel cream because it’s a little bit more lightweight and it absorbs it to the skin really easily this literally feels like a splash of water onto the skin and because it absorbs really well, and I’m really I prefer this under makeup So I’m just going to take a little bit and kind of Pat it into the skin So you can just drink it up, and this has a really light fragrance, which I find really nice and pleasant It’s like kind of fruity apple II almost but floral. I don’t know I really like it once my skin can that gets to a place where I feel like I can go Completely without makeup. I feel like this just gives your skin a really beautiful healthy glow Next for a blip bomb I’m just going to apply the drunk elephant Lippe bomb. I really like this It’s really lightweight has a big applicator Okay, so I always prime my face and this has pin as you can see my go-to primer for the last year or so ever Since I got it you can see how much I’ve used of it. I literally use just like Half a pump I just use about that much, which is not even probably a pea-sized And then I just focus it on the center of my face where I? Just want to even out pores forehead where I have some fine lines from expressions and Into the smile lines a little bit, and I like this because when I’m looking at primers I want something that’s kind of going to fill the pores a little bit and really smooth out the appearance of unevenness it doesn’t really Help kind of conceal scarring and kind of go over scarring, but it kind of lessons it a little bit Okay, so for my base. I’m really only going to use concealer today I feel like I don’t want to wear Foundation and concealer Because I can pretty much get away with just using this. I’m just running out I’m gonna do maybe some errands, and I have a meeting later today, so I’m not really doing anything crazy I’m not even gonna do a tie today but yeah So I’m gonna use the Tarte shape tape I’m gonna use it similarly to the way that you’ve probably seen me apply like a full coverage foundation Which is basically? Dotted in these areas where I need the coverage, and I’m using the shade light/medium And I’m going to take this little buffing brush I don’t know why I’ve just been really into the buffing brush lately Kind of not using a beauty blender to really apply my foundation that much anymore or not recently, so I’m just blending that Into the areas that I need the coverage basically doing like a concealer beard And if you’re wondering what brush this is this is a OCC Buffing brush, I don’t know if there’s a name for it, but it reminds me a lot of a Mac 109 I believe which back in the day when I worked at back was my go-to Brush that I would sell to people for foundation because I thought it was just the best and this is very similar But it’s synthetic. I just need to put a tiny bit on my forehead Do I need any more Just and if you’re new to my channel or haven’t seen me talk about how I like to apply my foundation I Need the coverage in the areas personally because I don’t want my scarring to kind of peek out But I like to see kind of these natural Freckles that I have on my cheeks. I feel like it provides a Little bit of realness to my look, I don’t want to look completely masked sometimes I do Generally, I don’t I feel like as I’ve gotten a little bit older having a lot of product on my skin just makes me look A lot older, and it also just makes my skin look a lot drier And cake here. I think it just is easier to look cakey here now So I pretty much just blended everything Towards the center, but everything else like right here my nose and here are pretty much Just my skin, okay, so I’ve zoomed you in a tiny bit You can see these are just like my natural sunspots age spots I don’t know what they are, but I embrace them and I like them because I have like kind of like a little 3 constellation thing here going and Then here I have a little bit darkness around my eyes, but I don’t totally hate it I do treat it like a natural grungy looking shadow But most of the other stuff is covered, but I do have some scars that kind of appear a little grayer Underneath any foundation or concealer that I apply and you know there’s no sense in Continuing to apply the same color concealer because you’re just gonna pack on product you want something That’s gonna cancel out that grey and do the job without having to pile on more product So that’s where the soft matte cream concealer comes in this is in the shade ginger it has a little bit more peach in it and So that will cancel out the darkness another thing that I’ve done in the past is this is a really old Smashbox pencil does the color correcting one? I think yeah color correcting stick and it’s literally like an orange crayon I’ll just show you really quick how I do that in comparison because you can mix it all the take a Tiny dot of it. This is how you would do dark really dark under-eye circles is you would cancel out the darkness with something orange? or red and Then pack on your concealer on top of it now if I have red pigmentation I would want to do something that have maybe green in it, but because my pigmentation is like a dark brown I Use orange, it’s definitely easier to just pile on a full coverage concealer or foundation But as I’ve been doing this a long time because I’ve been suffering with acne and acne scarring since you know I was a teenager I’ve just learned taking the time to perfect your skin like this a little bit and once you get the Method down it doesn’t take as much time you just can just look a little bit more real and again This is just my method if you’re comfortable in your scars by all means wear those scars loud and proud I you know applaud you for that. I am just not at that level Ok so moving on to the under eyes now I do conceal them a tiny bit just to balance everything out And I do want to add a little bit of brightness I have two different concealers that I can choose from and depends on the severity of my eye bags And what I feel like I need for the day I have the by Terry del Solis concealer and this is in the shade vanilla beige number two and This is really great If you just want something to give off that radiance and bring a little bit of glow to the under eyes But it doesn’t have a ton of coverage so some days I feel like this is really great and perfect and all I need but some days I’m like I need a little bit more coverage so the other one that I have here is by Urban Decay This is their all nighter Concealer you know I was a huge fan of their all-nighter Foundation, so this is just a full coverage Waterproof concealer, and this one is in the shade medium light warm And I’m gonna use this one today because I feel a little bit more tired So I’m just going to do two dots not a lot Right there Well that turned into more two dots the let’s just balance that And then I am going to use a sponge for this just because it’s easier to get into this area And you’ll notice that this isn’t Super brightening, or it’s not a really light shade. I couldn’t if you really wanted that bright under-eye I could probably go a shade lighter but I Don’t think I need that today So before I go in and powder everything and lock everything in place I’m actually gonna go in with my contour because this is the fenty Beauty What do they call this the matchstick in mocha, and I like this it’s a little bit more on the drier side And I definitely find that it is best applied before you apply Powder because sometimes I feel like you can get away with some cream products over powder But this one definitely is better before you powder, and I don’t like to apply it directly to the skin I feel like using the brush well. This brush is the foundation brush. I also have the contour brush I like this one better, so I’m gonna go like lean up and Then just kind of pack it under the cheekbone And then I will kind of draw it on the jaw line Ok so now I’m going to lock everything in place. This is just a loose powder. This is bye-bye Terry This is their hyaluronic hydra powder you just want to take a little bit at a time You don’t want to overdo with this, so I’m just lightly Packing it in and you can see my skin instantly looks so mattified So staying true to what I would normally do in my everyday morning routine I’m just gonna go ahead and do my brows really quickly and I don’t have to do too much because I do have the micro bladed I have to go get them touched up, so I’m just using my Benefit precisely my brown number 4 to just perfect the areas that maybe need to be touched up when I go in next week does that look somewhat even I Always have one brow that is slightly higher than the other just with the way my Eyes and forehead are I think my brows just naturally like one arch is higher than the other because I’m always like brow gel Probably tired of me talking about this brow gel Lancome sourcing styler Ok so now, but the browser on I’m just gonna finish off the face really easy from here on out This is just a Marc Jacobs bronzer, and I’m just going to Redefine those Cheekbones that we chisel out guys I need to tan I was when I was doing my thank-you 2017 video I was just like oh my gosh. I started off the Year last year so tan And I’m so pale so for highlighter you probably have seen me talk about this or mention it a lot on Instagram recently because I Unboxed it and then I used it and that was just was like Obsessed so this is the hourglass vanish highlighting stick blend. This is in the shade champagne flash now I will say when these came to me. They came to me a little bit melted or something that tip Was slightly off, but the product itself is really beautiful super pigmented. I’m just gonna do swatch on my hand This is what it looks like swatched Super reflective, and oh my gosh, this is what makes you look? Super dewy and fresh. I mean especially as an oily skin person you want to place your shine I think Selectively because naturally throughout the day I’m going to start breaking out in oils and stuff like that all over But not really on the high points of my cheeks, so this is where I get to add it myself and I think it just adds a really beautiful youthful glow and Again, this feels like nothing on the skin It just melts in you can blend it out to look a lot more natural and soft So it’s not as reflective like this, but still really beautiful or you can Just really go for it And I do feel like a finger is the best method again to kind of just use the warmth of your touch to just melt it in and make it look really nice and seamless I Think we’re pretty much done. I’m just gonna apply a little bit of blush this is the by Terry Compact Expert Dual and this one is in Sun Desire and this one you can see has a little bit more of a plushy tone it has like that rosiness on the outside and then a Slightly more reflective pink in the middle just take a powder brush. I’m gonna mix the two together. This definitely has a little bit more glow to it as well, so it’s going to just continue to add a little bit of dewiness to the skin So that is pretty much the base done, but I’ll just finish off the look because I’m gonna head out soon So I’m just going to apply a little bit of lip balm This is the Fenty Beauty does this have a color name? Oh Fenty Glow In the center blend it out this has a very sweet scent. I don’t know what it is, but Not super crazy about it if I’m honest, but the color is really nice and then final final step I’m just gonna apply a little bit of mascara on my top Lashes because I’m in between lash fills, and I just want to kind of make sure everything is separated and nice this is the by Terry growth booster has this nice wide brush I Don’t know that this is particularly good for my lash extensions, but again. I’m going to get a fill tomorrow, but um I ran out finally of my Victoria Beckham Estée Lauder mascara, which I loved for my extensions and everything But I have to move on. So tada. We are done that is my finished look I know that this is not necessarily like for everybody but as someone that has acne problems and deals with you know Issues with that This is definitely my go-to base routine And you know what I kind of look for when I’m applying my makeup whether it’s with these products or something else This is just the method I go for hopefully you found this helpful And you can achieve a look very similar if you’re interested let me know what you guys saw in the comment section down below Thank you so much for watching guys, and I’ll see you in the next one. Bye

  • What brush did you use for bronzer? x

  • Great tutorial. Keep them coming. You're fresh, honest and unique in the ever growing blah-ness of YouTube beauty now days.

  • As always – so informative and beautifully done. No fuss, no bloody emoticons, stupid scenes of attempted humour – just good information. You’re one of the only youtubers who haven’t sold out to the nonsense. Love you, Claire!

  • CLAIRE !!! I'm living in France so I really don't know if you can buy this brand but you should try " CLEANANCE EXPERT BY AVENE " this product is amazing for your skin problems. I used to have acne scaring and pigmentation and due to this amazing cream my skin looks like a baby skin

  • Hey Claire, just wanna say that I love how genuine, true, confident and relaxed you are. You come off very mature and your content is always so refreshing and creative. Love your work overall as always <3

  • Would really LOVE if Claire would do her 2017 Beauty/Skincare/Haircare Favorites… I always look forward to her favorites and recommendations because she has yet to fail me with her honest recommendations!
I wonder if she will be doing them this year? Anyone else would love for her to do her 2017 Beauty Favorites???

  • Yes! I've been doing this lately (simply because I was too lazy to apply full foundation!!) and I love this a lot better. It really does make my skin look natural and luminous; fresh. It's great to see this video because there are so many beauty gurus that pile on the foundation and concealer; this look is a welcome change.

  • You might look into the "clear and brilliant laser"- I'm 32, and i had Melasma (brown spots) that drove me nuts, also scarring from years of acne. It made a huge difference, Melasma is totally gone and scars are much lighter.

  • Love your natural lip color!!

  • Looks super natural and pretty!!

  • Doing a sheet mask and watching your video. Love you and your personality

  • 2018 is off to such a strong start with all these videos from you!! 💕

  • lashes goal

  • Can’t wait for you skin care recommendations as I also suffer with acne. I want to try some kate sommervile products but they are hard to get hold of for the UK 🙁

  • Loved this! You are so informative with the products you are using, and the finished result looks so natural and really pretty :))

  • I love this natural look! I don't spend much time on my base because I am too lazy ha ha…but still seeing you put it on seems nice!

  • Can someone please let me know the name of the OCC brush or the Mac one? Thanks a loy

  • I like before I watch because I know it's gonna be good <3

  • I actually thought that the natural color in your eyelids was eyeshadow and I loved it, so in my daily make up look I put a little bit of an orangy eyeshadow in my eyelid to imitate yours 😂

  • Beautiful 😍💕

  • You're a true artist, Claire. Thank you for another fantastic video.

  • Yas! Updated skin care, please 🙂

  • As someone who has acne problems and scarring, I absolutely appreciate ur makeup videos! I'll definitely be buying the products you used as a base as the results are stunning! 😍

  • Love it! Perfection!!!

  • Looking real and gorgeous.

  • Claire this is stunning. Sometimes glowy and pared back looks so much nicer than lots of colour and base. Just wished you went all the way including eyes 😀

  • You are so beautiful.

  • CLAIRE! Your video is always so aesthetically pleasing and why is your voice so soothing. Can you be my therapist ? 🙈

  • Also how does someone look like that without makeup. 😍😍😍

  • Can you please link the brushes you used?

  • love the tats

  • Thank you! I've been growing up with oily and acne prone skin so this video is super helpful especially cause i dont normally wear a lot of makeup hehe.

  • I like . It’s pretty and fresh

  • A tip I have for hyperpigmentation is actually African Shea Butter. It's super inexpensive, you can order it on amazon and I've been using day and night for a few weeks now and I've noticed a remarkable difference in my skin already (knock on wood). The shea butter doesn't clog my pores, helps with my acne scaring, and keeps my skin looking glowy and clear! Maybe something to try? 🙂

  • Which brushes are you using? Especially the bronzer brush

  • That’s what I use for “foundation” too!

  • Beautiful

  • I feel like when I stopped using a beauty blender my acne got 100% better

  • Do you still have that cat shirt for sale darling?!

  • Finally!!
Wanted to ask you about how you apply your base 2 years ago at BeautyCon but did not have enough time! haha Love how you always have quality videos <3

  • Really really loved this video! Thank you so much for showing how to conceal spots without a lot of makeup. This was really informative and I loved how you showed basic application techniques, etc.

  • Updated skincare routine please

  • this is really random, but the way your camera adjusts focus is SO SMOOTH and beautiful! It really makes the viewing experience really amazing when you show products up close to lens then you. move the product away!!

  • Hey Claire! First off I wanted to say how much I love you, watching your videos and your style, you are amazing! Also wondered if you could do a video on your hair style/cut and color? What I would tell my hair stylist to achieve your type of cut/color and just an overall updated video of how you’ve been styling it lately. Thank you!! 🙂

  • Claire your skin is looking amazing now! But what helped my adult acne is eating turmeric tablets! You will see the difference trust me it reduces the inflammation on the skin. I went from 3 pumps to half a pump thank you turmeric! xoxo

  • I've been following you for over a year and this is my first time ever commenting, but I just want to say, great video as always, and what I love about your make up tutorials is that they're "real." I'm 30, my skin is ageing, I have monolids, and suffer with spots and skin problems, and I found it difficult to find tutorials which helped me. But since taking advice from your videos, I look and feel better, and I really want to thank you for giving me this confidence! You really are an inspiration (as a person too). Love you, and I continue to look forward to more of your work. Take care xoxo

  • Claire, this video helped me figure out a basic routine. I've been wanting to try a lot of makeup products, and didn't know where to begin shopping, I've only ever worn mascara and brow products. I recently delved into concealers and powder, and after seeing this I got my first primer. Thanks for making the makeup process seem simpler.

  • Beautiful💗

  • Lool i use just as much concealer for my acne n scars, love this base routine I can totally relate, fyi the no makeup looks on youtube where they just stick on mascara and lip balm… I'm always like hmmm must be nice 😝🤣😁

  • Hey Claire, you are beautiful and I really enjoy watching your contents. Just curious, you have oily skin type, but how come you go through days without shampooing? Don't you feel greasy? Any special reason?

  • Your skin looks beautiful. You are very talented. Have you ever talked with your doctor about getting Retin-A? I think it would really help with the acne scaring you have on your face. I used it years ago, in my 30’s, l’m 60 now, and it really clear the pigmentation I had on my face. Pretty amazing. Take care

  • Thank you for sharing; you’re so relatable and easy to watch! It’s been fun watching your home evolve! Quick question….do you have suggestions for a more combination/dryer skin type to achieve the same dewey glow?

  • Does anyone know of another Asian beauty vlogger who has dry skin? Struggling to find products that are relevant to my skin tone/type!

  • Loved your base every look routine Claire! I enjoy these more talk thru, talking type vids. Miss your classic Claire videos like these 🙂

  • WOw o wow thank you so much for posting this. For the longest time I wondered why i didnt have that sleek surface and thought that I should never use highlighter over the small craters in my skin from acne. Now I see having a good base is the way to begin.

  • Oh my gosh, I have large pores and pitted scarring, and I would LOVE to know what you use to minimize your scarring.

  • Hi! I've been looking for that cat cocoon you got Bruce. I don't remember which video it was, so I am leaving this comment on the first video that popped up for me in your thread! There seems to be a lot of cat cocoons out there, hoping you can point me in the right direction, bc the one you got him looks perfect for my kitty. Thanks, Ashley

  • Just found your channel and I am in love!!! Love the natural, dewy, no fuss type of look, especially with trouble skin! So refreshing from the full coverage masks I see everywhere!

  • Hey Claire, Your skin is looking so good and clear, but I wanted to see if you have ever looked into derma stamping or microneedling for the scarring from struggling with acne? I just had my third microneedling treatment done in SF and i'm really happy with the way my skin is shaping up. 🙂

  • does anyone know what buffing brush this is? like the exact number? can't seem to find it when i search 'occ buffing brush'

  • I love it!!! I LOVE THIS LOOK. Love the natural makeup, same thing with me now and day I don’t cake my face. I like the almost realistic skin showing thru. Dislike the heavy makeup feeling plus it make me look sooo old too.

  • You look gorgeous!! 💕

  • What brush do you use for the bronzer and blush? Love it

  • Your lash extensions are the perfect curl

  • claire! I havent watched for a long time, but i was wondering did you get lip fillers? they look gorgeous though 🙂

  • It’s nice to find a woman who also loves makeup but isn’t into a whole heavily done face every day. Im a nursing student & a mom of 4, who suffers from hormonal acne ( the beard shape 😣) pigmentation issues if the wind blows the wrong way & texture issues. I like to focus more on skin care versus just covering it all up, so this routine is right up my alley! Thank you for always staying real & giving everyone else permission to do the same. You are truly an amazing soul and I hope you hear that more often than not

  • Hi, I just found you on YouTube this week. I’m glad you found someone to talk to. Good for you! Thank you for the recommendation on the smashbox color correcting stick in orange. I realized while watching this video that my brown spots still come through after color correcting because I have been using a light orange/peach color – wrong color! Just ordered the orange.

  • The coverage from the concealer is amazing – really covers scaring and looks beautiful!

  • Yes! I love that you made a base tutorial with your skin type ! I have a similar skin type and have been needing help making my skin look “real” like you said lol and not looking cakey by trying to keep it from getting oily . I also like how you made it a simple, everyday look

  • your skin is insanely beautiful

  • where do you go for your lashes extensions?!?!?! is there a video where you talk about it?!?!

  • You are so beautiful – I can only see any pigmentation you have when I force myself to focus on it. If anything, it reminds me that you have at least one "imperfection" and are a human and not a literal goddess. Favorite creator on YouTube, so intelligent and grounded.

  • I feel like my skin is definitely like yours. Oily and acne prone. But have you ever thought of going with a dermatologist and getting procedures done on your face? Like chemical peels or anything like that? So much stuff out there that can improve the scars. I’ve been looking into it and wanted to see what you would recommend! Thanks!

  • New subscriber (from Mary’s channel). Great video! Now that I’m in my 30s, lighter coverage works a lot better for me, too. Xo

  • you're so beautiful! i'm so glad i found your channel – i just learned so much. from finding your instagram, i would have had no idea you had acne prone skin, you always look flawless. it's also nice to see a fellow creator who isn't uhhh 17. thanks for being awesome!

  • Just came across your channel! You are stunning! New subbie 🙂

  • Can i ask you a question?i am wondering because i Not Really a fan of Contouring. It makes my face to strong and manly.
i Keep it Light 😂 but if i contour my jawline it looks like dirt 😢 thats sucks.

  • such a positive glowing queen <3

  • So appreciate the time you take to share your knowledge, it's like sitting with a good friend, it lifts you above the crowd of "you tubers" that sound like an infomercial

  • Your eyebrows look awesome!!!

  • how do u get ur extensions to stick up so much i have monolids and eyelash extensions but they dont show up from the front

  • When I first watched this I so appreciated the simplicity. Since then, I’ve developed acne and scars, and this tutorial is everything to me right now. Thanks Claire!

  • thank you!! subscribed! yes(!!) natural eyelook but lots of thoughts on base makeup 🙂 do you have suggestions highlighters + contours for your type of skin but also get some flakes during the winter? im debating between the fenty beauty trio (lining, starstruck, amber) & the kevyn aucoin countour volume 3. not sure whether i should just buy contour separately + hourlgass gold flash. i wear lenaige bb cushion 23sand so i'm like a medium skin tone

  • Love your base routine. Something I can follow easily and fast. And I love that use your fingers all the time!! I have the same type skin and eyes as you, and youre my go to youtube makeup artist. Thank you for posting great videos and helping me with my skin and makeup routines. ❤️🙏🏽🔥

  • Such a stunning woman

  • Shiseido tests on animals😭

  • omg Claire awesome videos! All around: details, extra info, tips, tricks, etc! Not to mention you're gorgeous with or without any makeup!! Keep it up girl!!
